Why do volunteers pick up litter from Morecambe Bay?

Beach Clean at Hest Bank

Find out why people give their time to clear litter from Morecambe Bay, and discover the sorts of litter and rubbish we find.

On the last day of May 2024, we led a beach clean to celebrate our month long challenge event '100K in May for Morecambe Bay'.

This beach clean on Friday 31 May coincided with half term so we were joined by a variety of volunteers including very young and enthusiastic beach cleaners. In total, 28 people gave their time to pick up litter and rubbish clearing 39.5kg of litter and rubbish from the shore at Hest Bank.

From old pens to plastic bottles, a cushion, shoe soles to empty canisters of gas, an abandoned tent and aging plastic litter, it's astonishing how much waste collects on the Bay and what we find together.

So why do people want to give their time to pick up litter?

Two members of the local community talked to us about why they want to volunteer their time for Morecambe Bay.

As you can see, so much litter and rubbish ends up at our beaches - either washed ashore, blown onto the beach or left through littering and tipping. It's harmful to humans, pets and the Bay's wildlife, it pollutes our water and our beaches. We want to say thank you to everyone who joined us to clean and protect our Bay. Thank you for giving your time and showing your care and love for Morecambe Bay.

If you want to get involved join our 'Love Morecambe Bay' community by signing up to newsletter. You'll receive details of all our latest events including beach cleans and litter picks. Together we can can keep Morecambe Bay special.
