Heritage & Volunteering

Can you help tell the story of our changing coast?

As 2025 begins, are you looking for new opportunities to get involved and learn more about the history of our coastline? If you're a history enthusiast and interested in Morecambe Bay, you could help tell the story of our changing coast.

Heritage Volunteering Opportunities

Are you interested in history and Morecambe Bay? Perhaps you would like to volunteer and contribute to understanding our coast. Find out more here.

As part of Our Future Coast project, we are looking for history enthusiasts to help tell the story of our changing coast. We are using historical data to understand how human and environmental changes have shaped our current shoreline and how it might continue to change in the future. We are sharing this information with engineers and our community task groups to help them decide how to best protect the coast from flooding. To get involved, no experience is needed, just an interest in the past.

Opportunity 1: In Hest Bank, we need local volunteers to assist in collecting maps, documents, and photographs that show changes in the coast. We’ll organise fortnightly visits to Preston Archives to photograph interesting items we have found in the catalogue. To find out more about what’s involved come along to our event at Slyne with Hest Memorial Hall on the 23rd of January 2025. Book your spot here.

Opportunity 2: We also need volunteers to read and make transcripts of the documents we find about Hest Bank, Millom, and other Our Future Coast sites around the North West. This can be done entirely from home, as long as you have access to an email address and a computer with a word processor and photo viewer. There will also be the opportunity for digital meet-ups to chat about what we have found. Contact claire@morecambebay.org.uk to find out more and join in.
