Our Changing Coast
Part of the Our Future Coast project. We are using historical data to understand the long-term patterns of coastal change at our sites.
Help Tell the Story of Millom Marsh
Please note the event on the 5th of October has now been cancelled in favour of an online event on the 10th of October. Morecambe Bay Partnership is seeking history enthusiasts who want to make a meaningful impact on coastal preservation and engineering.
Coastal change has rapidly become a serious risk to communities around the world. While flooding and erosion events have undoubtedly become more regular and extreme in recent years humans have been recording these problems for centuries.
Historical documents, maps, and photographs can help us build a picture of how our coast has changed through time. Using these sources, we hope to understand how human and environmental changes have shaped our current coastline and how it might continue to change in the future.
We need local volunteers to assist in collecting and analysing the documents that detail the evolution of Millom Marsh and the Duddon Estuary, searching online photograph collections, and interviewing long-time residents to gather personal stories and knowledge.
Volunteer Roles and Responsibilities
Volunteers will assist in various aspects of the project, including:
- Conducting archival research to uncover historical data about coastal changes, weather events, and human impact.
- Collecting and analysing old maps, photographs, and documents that detail the evolution of our shoreline.
- Interviewing long-time residents, to gather personal stories and knowledge.
- Collaborating with coastal engineers and environmental scientists to integrate historical findings into planning and decision-making processes.
Why Volunteer with Us?
Volunteering for the Coastal History Research Project offers a unique chance to:
- Contribute to vital research that directly impacts coastal engineering and preservation efforts.
- Gain hands-on experience in historical research.
- Make a lasting impact on the future of our coastal environment.
Who Should Apply?
We welcome volunteers of all ages and backgrounds, particularly those interested in history or environmental science. No prior experience is required—just a passion for learning and a commitment to making a difference.
