What happened on the first ever Morecambe Bay Day?
The first ever Morecambe Bay Day took place on Wednesday 16 October 2024.
Earlier the same year, the whole team at Morecambe Bay Partnership were excited to realise that ‘Morecambe Bay', as the recognisable place that we all know today, reached the milestone of 250-years-old in 2024 - first appearing on a map in The Antiquities of Furness by Thomas West in 1774.
We wanted to mark this special occasion so we invited schools to celebrate a special 'Morecambe Bay Day' on 16 October, championing the Bay and helping to fundraise for Bay charities.
How did schools celebrate the Bay?
Schools were encouraged to think of imaginative ways to celebrate the Bay. From themed bake sales, art competitions, non-uniform days, to singing, storytelling, birds of the Bay collages, sponsored walks and more, schools celebrated 'Morecambe Bay Day' whilst raising money for us AND Bay Search and Rescue.
By taking part, schools helped to raise money directly for the Bay through local charities: for us, Morecambe Bay Partnership, running projects caring for nature, heritage and our communities, and Bay Search & Rescue who are dedicated to keeping people safe around our coast.
As a thank you for taking part, Morecambe Bay Partnership shared free resources about the Bay to inspire schools and a special video from Bay Search and Rescue on how to stay safe around the Bay.
Participating schools included:
1. Trumacar Nursery & Primary School, Heysham
2. Silverdale St John's C of E Primary School
3. Torrisholme Community Primary School, Morecambe
4. Overton St Helen's C of E Primary School
5. St Peter's C of E Primary School, Heysham
6. Ryelands Primary & Nursery School, Lancaster
Schools raised a whopping £3,750 for the Bay.
We want to say a heartfelt THANK YOU to all the schoolchildren, teachers, parents, families, carers and donors who got behind Morecambe Bay Day. With special mention to Trumacar whose sponsored litter pick raised over £2,000 alone!
Next year, Morecambe Bay Day will be back - bigger and brighter. We'll announce news through our newsletter so if you'd like to be the first to hear, sign up to our newsletter below.
