Great cycling routes around Morecambe Bay whatever your level of riding ability

Enjoy miles of awe-inspiring sea, sand, and mountain views as you pedal along ample stretches of flat cycleways, quiet lanes, along old railway lines, curious waterways and coastal promenades.

But if you’re looking for more of a challenge, you don’t have to stick with easy, seaside bike rides. Discover the scenic hinterland of the Bay where you’ll find peaceful, hilly lanes, woodland tracks and panoramic viewpoints.

Venture out for a few days

Morecambe Bay is the home of the Bay Cycle Way – a national cycle network route covering 81 miles hugging the coastline from Sandy Gap on Walney Island to Glasson Dock, south of Lancaster. It’s the only long-distance route in the UK, where you can actually see the end at the beginning and is the perfect introduction for people who are new to cycle touring.

There are lots of reasons to visit again, with the Lakes and Dales Loop, Way of the Roses and Walney to Wear also taking in some fantastic stretches of the Bay’s best cycle routes.

Short of time?

There are lots of rewarding shorter routes which start from the Bay’s many picturesque villages and bustling towns, with many accessible by public transport.

Leave your car at home

Enjoy car-free days out combining your bike ride with a spectacular train journey. Check out The Furness Line with connections from West coast mainline stations. There is nothing more spectacular than to sit back and trundle across the Kent Viaduct between Arnside and Grange-over-Sands by train and pick up a route at either end.

Plan your route

Use the Outdoor Active route planner to find the route that suits you and your riding companions the best. Plan in stops at villages, towns and local attractions along the way, and never be far from a loo, a brew and a view!
